A key to independent learning
in early years
Introduction:
Module 4 deals with what teachers should know with respect to the way newborns, infants and then children start making use of their linguistic competence as they begin to utter and produce sounds. As children grow, those sounds later will lead to the formation of words and thus these words will act as one-word sentences, then as two-word sentences and finally they will form complete sentences. At this stage, children become preschoolers who will start making an acceptable combination of words as they position them within the sentence. In other words, under-fives will be aware that words within a sentence have a specific word order (syntax), at the same time they begin noticing one word can have several meanings (semantics) or different pronunciation (phonology) as well. This is how Language Awareness will develop the footing for children´s Linguistic Competence.
